how to become thane of riften

I've finished up the Meadery quest, and also the Skooma quest. I have also bought the house in Riften. I spoke with Maven Blackbriar after all of this, but she didn't mention anything about making me a thane. How do I get the housecarl for Riften? (playing on xbox)

If you've bought Honeyside, you're already a Thane, and your housecarl Iona should be in your house.

While Maven Blackbriar clearly runs the show in Riften, the figurehead Jarl (Laila Law-Giver) and her assistant (Anuriel) are still the people you should be talking to on matters of title and deed.

Its a glitch Maven can't give you a housecarl. You have to become thane of riften before you complete the civil war questline(imperial) It probably still works if you side with the stormcloaks because Jarl Law giver is still the Jarl of Riften. Otherwise you won't get a housecarl if Maven Black Briar is the Jarl .

i have just finished the skooma quest and have helped out loads of people in Riften so i can become thane. firstly, you need to buy a house, which i have done, and when i go back to the Jarl, nothing comes up about making me thane. she told me before that i need to purchase property within the city and to return when i had done so so she could make me thane. now there's no dammed option for "can you make me thane now?" or something to that effect.

any ideas?

oh, and my housecarl is not at honeyside, and ive bought all the decorations for it as well

This happened to me with all three guys I've made. I have "Return to the Jarl of Riften" in my Misc. cue, which replaced the "help five people" one. However, when I talk to the Jarl I have no such option. Maven was never the Jarl either in any one of those runs. Not when I did all of that anyway.

Here's some things you need to know. Doing the Skooma quest doesn't automatically give you the option to become a thane. You have to do stuff for other people as well. I helped that guy who was in debt to Saphir and that guy who was cheated by the Black-Briars who said they'd sell him a horse. After doing those sorts of things, then the Jarl offered me thaneship.

However, it's not that easy. She tells you you must first buy Honeyside. Do so, and you will have a prompt to go visit Honeyside. DO NOT DO THIS. Buy Honeyside, and then immediately talk to the Jarl again. If you buy the house and go check it out BEFORE you talk to the Jarl, a glitch will stop you from getting the option to talk to her again about becoming a thane.

So here's what you need to do:

1) do quests for the people of Riften.
2) complete the Skooma quest.
3) buy Honeyside.
4) DO NOT go visit Honeyside.
5) talk to the Jarl and become a thane.
6) NOW you can go visit Honeyside.

i've been using the game guide that bethesda ade for it and its very vague about this. it tells you that when you have bought Honeyside, you can go and meet your housecarl in your new house. thank god for the multiple load options!!! lol

Yeah that's not my issue though. I mean ya buy the house from the steward. She's sitting right next to the Jarl. Why would you go see your house first, and then come back to see the Jarl? I never did. She's RIGHT THERE! I always talked to her before I left the keep and ever saw my house for the first time. Still didn't work.

What I DIDN'T do is help 5 people before doing the skooma quest. That's probably been my problem.

The glitch happens if you buy decorations for the house.

Now THAT I've always done because I've had the coin to do so as soon as I bought it each time. Hmmm...I think that may be the ticket right there.
